News came out of Johnny’s Ice House in Chicago that Hawks center Dave Bolland will undergo back surgery. Chris Kuc broke the story on the Chicago Tribune website this afternoon.
Head coach Joel Quenneville told the Tribune “it was something he was dealing with throughout most of last year. I don’t think he was comfortable at the start of the year.”

Bolland had missed most of the pre-season with the back ailment, and he was playing regularly during the regular season before a setback had caused him to miss the team’s last two games.
With the return of Jonathan Toews to the Hawks line-up, it is especially troublesome that the team has lost Bolland, because they are once again down a center.
Bolland had a decent start to the season, netting two goals and adding four assists in 13 games. He also was averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time a game for the injury depleted squad, and was a physical force during several key games.
UPDATE @5:10 pm CST:
According to the Hawks official website, Bolland underwent successful back surgery today.
Blackhawks Head Team Physician Dave Terry said “Dave underwent minimally invasive surgery today for a herniated disk. The surgery went well and we anticipate a full recovery. He should be back in 12 to 16 weeks.”
